Herbal Therapy (BA)

(Modules 4 and 7) – 120 Total Credits

Also known as herbal medicine, herbalism is the use of plants and plant extracts for health purposes. Programs in herbal therapy teach students about the effects of these herbs on health and wellness. A natural health program also includes the study of other naturopathic and phytotherapeutic disciplines. Through this practice of phytotherapy, herbal therapists use their knowledge of Chinese, Ayurvedic, European and other herbal traditions for healing purposes and to prevent disease. The curriculum in this degree program focuses on the study of behavior and the application of plants in regard to natural medicine. 

Requirement for Bachelor’s Degree/Course Enrollment:

Students must have completed our Associates Degree Program (60 credits) or have a degree or applicable life experiences that totals 60 credits in order to enroll in our Bachelor Degree Programs.

Core Curriculum Course Descriptions


MOD-4-1. Healing Herbs – Practical advice for the newcomer and pearls of wisdom for the herbal practitioner. This course delivers the lowdown on virtually every healing herb available in today’s marketplace. A complete guide to 180 healing herbs with description and history, therapeutic uses, medicinal properties, prescription counterparts, dosage options, safety and effectiveness rating, and precautions.

MOD-4-2. Iridology I – Learn the links between health and the patterns, colors, and textures of the iris. This course describes the basics of iris analysis in easy-to-understand language with dozens of illustrations, color photos, and charts. After recognizing weaknesses in the iris, you will be able to suggest lifestyle changes to achieve optimum health.    

MOD-4-3. Biblical Healthy Living– This course explores what the Bible says about healthy diet and compares it with modern science. The research upholds the wisdom of biblical advice. Anyone who is sick and tired of feeling sick and tired will find in this course the secrets to more abundant energy, freedom from illness, and more vibrant health.  

MOD-4-4. Worldwide Herbalism – This course teaches the herbal traditions of the entire world with references to over 400 medicinal herbs. An integration of Western herbs into the traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic systems. It covers the philosophies of traditional Eastern herbal medicine along with describing the herbs and their uses and compares these systems to Western herbal traditions.

MOD-4-5. Reflexology – This course covers the complete guide to the anatomy of the feet and the workings of Reflexology, the therapeutic foot massage for health and well-being. It explains the art and science of reflexology: how it works; the ailments it treats; how to locate and massage the various reflexology points. 

MOD-4-6. Anatomy II – This course offers comprehensive coverage about the human body. Included are: 226 color illustrations, depicting all organs and systems of the human body, 29 chapters of descriptive text written by current and former faculty at one of the world’s foremost medical institutions, and an index of plates and descriptions for quick identification of any structure, organ, or system.

MOD-4-7. Aromatherapy I – You’ll learn ways to add fragrance to your life, about the plants and the history, what exactly are these things called essential oils and carrier oils, how to dilute and blend, what supplies to buy, the correct way to measure and blend. Plus, we will go into safety and storage issues and you’ll be given many recipes for beginning concoctions.

MOD-4-8.  EMFs Hidden Hazards: Topics include – What EMFs (electromagnetic fields) actually are, where you find them in your daily life, and how they affect you. The toll that EMFs have been proven to take in conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and neuro-psychiatric illnesses. Why you’ve been largely kept in the dark about this threat to your health. How you can actually repair the damage done by EMFs at a cellular level. 

MOD-4-9. Introduction to Microbiology – This course will introduce the students to the microbial world. General properties of microorganisms including classification, morphologic and growth characteristics, metabolism and genetics will be discussed. Students will explore the role of microbes especially microbial flora of our body including gut flora and its role in natural health.  Selected microorganisms that cause disease will be discussed. The course will consist of group discussion format. Students will be assessed on discussion posts, essay and midterm and final exams in multiple choice format.

MOD-4-10. Introduction to Immunology – This course will introduce the students to immunology. The organization, function and normal immune response will be studied in detail. An overview of disorders of immunity will be studied. Finally, application of immunology to diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases will be discussed. The course will consist of discussion format. Students will be assessed on discussion posts, essay and midterm and final exams in multiple choice format.


Major Specific Course Descriptions


MOD-7-1: Evidence-Based Validation of Herbal Medicine including Phytochemical and Phyto-Pharmacological evaluation – 
This Module brings together current thinking and practice in the areas of characterization and validation of natural products. It covers all aspects of evaluation and development of medicines from plant sources, including their cultivation, collection, Phytochemical and Phyto-pharmacological evaluation, and therapeutic potential. Emphasis is placed on describing the full range of evidence-based analytical and bio-analytical techniques used to characterize natural products, including Phyto-chemical analysis, hyphenated techniques, and many more.

MOD-7-2: Herbal Medicine: Pharmacodynamic Part 1 and 2 – This Module examines in extensive detail the physiologic effects of complementary and alternative therapies, foods, supplements, vitamins, and traditional herbal remedies including the adverse effects and interactions of each herb, drug, and food.

MOD-7-3: Herbal Medicine: Biomolecular and Clinical – This Module focuses on presenting current scientific evidence of biomolecular effects of selected herbs and their relation to clinical outcome and promotion of human health. It includes experimental approaches for looking at the bioactive components in herbs. It also addresses the ethical challenges of using herbal medicine and its integration into modern, evidence-based medicine. This module also contains an in-depth scientific examination of effects of individual herbs, as well as their use in the treatment of important diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, dermatologic disorders, neurodegenerative disease, and diabetes. Due to the strong associations between oxidative stress, ageing, and disease, the powerful antioxidant properties of herbs and spices are also examined. The herbs featured are some of the most widely used remedies and cover a wide range, including flowering herbs, fruits and berries, roots and rhizomes, and fungi.

MOD-7-4: Herbal Medicines Interactions – This module contain information on herb-drug, herb-supplement, herb -food and herb-laboratory test interactions all of which is data referenced. Commercial herbal medicinal products are increasingly consumed on a regular basis by people in the developed world. Often such products are taken concurrently with conventional medicines, frequently without the knowledge of health care professionals. As more evidence has become available, there has been an increasing awareness of the potential and actual problems of interactions, often dangerous, between conventional medicines and herbal medicines. This module brings together available data on approximately 200 of the most commonly used herbal medicines in highly structured, rigorously scientific results.

MOD-7-5: Traditional Herbal Medicine Research Methods – This module introduces the methodology for collection and identification of herbal materials, extraction and isolation of compounds from herbs, in vitro bioassay, in vivo animal test, toxicology, and clinical trials of herbal research. To fully understand and make the best use of herbal medicines requires the close combination of chemistry, biochemistry, biology, pharmacology, and clinical science.

MOD-7-6: Regulation and Validation of Plant-derived Medicines for Health – This module provides a reference model for those who would like to start the Research and Development process for a natural product. It also discusses fundamental issues in the development of traditional medicines for the benefit of health care and brings awareness to the many problems facing the development of medicinal herbal products, such as quality control, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic issues.

MOD-7-7: Herbal Medication Around the world – This module look at  most common herbs used in a number of countries worldwide.

MOD-7-8: Herbal Preparation – This module emphasizes the point that herbal medicine-making is fundamental to every culture on the planet and is accessible to everyone. It covers herbal preparation for numerous ailments and disorders. 

MOD-7-9: Herbology and Botany –  This module expands on culture bacteria, isolate micro-organisms, Microscopic examination, Plant Pathology and more

MOD-7-10: Fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Medicine – Traditional Chinese medicine under the influence and direction of classic Chinese philosophies, has undergone long-term medical practice gradually evolving into a unique medical theoretical system that contributed significantly to the health care of the Chinese people and the prosperity of the Chinese nation. This module comprehensively covers the main components of TCM, such as Basic Theory, Diagnosis, Prescription, Chinese Materia Medica, Tui Na, Acupuncture and Moxibustion.
